Report from the Show

#1 Post by DoctorG »

I arrived at the sponsoring hotel this afternoon and stopped in to say "hi" to Saul and MVT who were overseeing the KB University painting class. It looked like there were 20 or more participants and they were very busy working on their projects, etc. The other fun starts later tonight, so I'll try and post here as time permits. :D

The Friday night festivities were up and running with the bands and the movie showings. I was able to get into the dealer's room (helping MVT with his "injured" Head Merchant) and it looked like it was setting up really well. I heard a rumor that George Romero had cancelled, but I haven't heard anything "official" yet on this (did see Tom Savini in the elevator though :D ). The Friday night crowd was a bit thin, but there were a number of resin and styrene heads in the bar. I had the pleasure of buying a beer for Steve Iverson (CultTVMan), who celebrated his 46th birthday on Friday.....

Saturday had a lot of people in the Dealer's Room, which was set-up quite well--had a real Wonderfest feel to it. I picked up Saul's latest Silver Screen Icon bust (Lon Chaney Hunchback) and got a close look at the Ninja Christian Bale piece at Robb's table. There was a 16 mm showing of the Night of Living Dead (NO George Romero--he was tied up with filming in Canada), followed by a panel discussion from NOTLD original cast members. Saul did a real nice job on his airbrushing seminar which had about 20 attendees.

All-in-all, the day went well with a lot of activity and attendance for a first-time show. I'm not sure how well sales went in the Dealer's Room, but I'm sure someone else will post on that topic.

I'm not sure since I haven't been over to Gabe's table yet. I'll see if can find out today.

BTW, the Costume Contest was real fun. They had about 12 entries and someone in a full-sized Bender the Robot costume won the 1st Place Prize. There were some very good costumes and all were judged by the make-up master himself--Tom Savini!

I attended Kit Builders University on Friday and went to the show on Saturday. Wish I would have seen the costume contest. I don't know how well the Dealers were doing but I did my best to send them home with alot of my money for sure! All in all I had a great time and met some really cool people.

Just got back from the show. I had an absolute blast. I was in the University on friday and had the honor of having Saul, MVT, Tom, Al and Bubba help over in our section. Rusty Nail was seated behind me. These guys were patient and informative, not to say also encouraging. The intimidation factor of their talent dissappeared when you talk to them and see they are just real friendly people that love this obsession. THEN THE SPIRITS FLOWED AT NIGHT.

Everything to me was outstanding. The movies that were shown, the dealers room, the seminars. All of the guests were personable and approachable (cough*cough* except for one. No names but if you were there youd know). I want Judith O'dea to adopt me i absolutely love her. I loved the ZS. Decked out in black assault gear keeping our safety the #1 priority.

Gabe didn't debut anything at the show but i sat in on his sculpting lecture which was outstanding and informative. All in all i made alot of new good friends and met alot of friendly interesting people. Picked up some nice pieces. It was nice putting a name to the Avitars. I have some pics and will hope fully post more but have to help the wife with the kids and get ready for work tomorrow. All i can say is cant wait till Monsterous Weekend #2 and cannot wait to see everyone at Wonderfest. I think my daughter is gonna come with me next year. She would have a blast. If anything she can hang out and play with some of the other kids there to.

Last but not least the biggest thanks you goes to Barb and Dan for putting this all together. I have a little idea what its like to coordinate alot of things but nothing your scale. Everything you suffered thru and sacrificed so people like myself and others could have a good time, well i cant find the words for it so i hope you can understand how appreciative i am by saying thanks. You two are in a class all your own that is held very high.

I have to admit we were a little worried that it was going to be a very slow show because of the economy but I was happily suprised! It went over really well. First shows are always a little slow. The first time I set up as a dealer at wonderfest I made enough money to get home. But a couple of years later we are now making a steady profit. It's like any thing new we have to take baby steps and work our way up to a full run! That being said we really enjoyed the show. I love the cross over between Horror & models.
I hope they can keep it up. Monster Dork will be there again if they do!
The only bummer for me was Romero canceling. I had plans to present him with a paint up of Breakfast of Champions but instead this guy ended up buying it!

Pun 13, Resin Realities, Ultratumba and Clint with Acme, Spyda and Dan and Barb and Zombie Squad it was great to hang out with you all.

Thanks to you modelers for buying kits over the weekend!

If you have not had a chance to listen to "Ghoultown" they are flippn' SWEET!

Right. As I see it, a model show, being brand new, can be expected to start slow, especially given the state of the economy, especially.
I hope they can keep it up. Monster Dork will be there again if they do!
Same here. If they are doing it again next year, I will be there.
