Kolchak - The Night Stalker

#1 Post by derekc62 »

Here's Kolchak, a 1/4 scale solid resin bust sculpted by Mark Van Tine and produced by Paul Gill many years ago.

He's been sitting on my to-do shelf for years and I dusted him off (literally) earlier this month so he could finally be finished.

As with most of my projects I like to try something new and this time I took the pinstriping to the nth degree to replicate Kolchak's jacket.

Unfortunately my photography skills suck and the skin isn't quite what you see in person and the photos don't show off the freckles as would see them in person.

Thanks very much Vlad, Trevor, Marty and Rick.

Yes, the pinstriping was a chore. So tedious that I could only do it for an hour or two at a time which explains why it took five days. I frequently asked myself why I was doing it but I like the result so in this case the end justified the means...

Wow Derek. Are you serious? We are all our own worst critic (unless you're married). The pin striping looks impossible to me. Is that just a good eye and a steady hand?

Thanks very much Stormheart and Steve.

And no, Steve, I couldn't trust myself to do the work by hand.
The pinstriping was all done one strand of 0.4 mm masking tape at a time. On roughly four occasions I had to pull up many of the strands to reposition them because as I got farther away from the first strand laid down during a given session the gaps between each length of masking tape would invariably get wider. I would only notice this "drift" once I had a fair number of them down and the wider gaps would become evident. Again, one of the reasons the masking took five days. (You can see a "before" shot with the masking tape in the "Kolchak" thread in "The Workbench")

The painting, on the other hand, took five minutes and the touchups took about an hour after I'd pulled off all the tape.

 Incredibly impressive, none the less. It's this kind of effort, among other skills, that makes you an exceptional modelmaker.

At the risk of asking the magician to reveal one trick too many, are the eyes waterslide decals?

Great job! (I personally couldn't do the pinstriping. I know my limits....)

No secrets here, I believe in sharing all techniques. A rising tide floats all boats, as they say.

For the eyes I actually did trust my relatively steady hand. They were hand painted using a fine brush.

I always start with a darker color - dark brown in this case - watered down to a water-color consistency to get the outline and position. Then I use an undiluted version of the color to fill in the circle.
A lighter color then goes over top of that, almost - but not quite - touching the outer rim of the dark color. Look at your own eyes and you'll see a darker outer edge on the iris.
I then paint the striations of the iris with either the darkest color or an even lighter color (depends on my mood and feeling about the eye color). Between the striations I now use the very tip of the brush to place small dots.
The pupil goes in next and depending on how the colors are sitting I will sometimes use a new color (green/brown/yellow) to paint a faint circle at the outer edge of the pupil (again, look at your own eyes and you'll see what I'm referring to).
After everything is thoroughly dry the whole eye then gets a coat of Tamiya gloss clear.
By they way, I uses a slightly different technique - but only slightly - for 1:1 scale pieces where you have a lot more room for detail.

Thanks Tim.
Technically it's not hard at all but it is tedious and can literally put a physical strain on me as I fiddle around with the tape, usually hunched over :D

Thanks for that Derek. My eyes are not what they're use to be after a repaired retinal detachment last year but I'll give it a go!

I'd estimate roughly 10-15 hours.
It took five days and I worked on it between one and two hours at a time. Sometimes two or three times a day.

FYI - I've created another "how to" video using Kolchak.

This one's on using glazes and washes in painting light colored skin.
