The Mandalorian

#1 Post by Ant »

Another 3D print from Gambody.com. You get files for FDM at 1/8th and resin at 1/16th scale - basically it's the same model but the FDM set is broken into smaller pieces.

I wanted a "Bandai" 1/12th scale figure but I ended scaling the FDM set down even though I was printing in resin because I find it's just easier to support smaller simpler pieces than big complex structures. And it's also easier to paint the separate parts later.

The only problem I had was the fit of all the parts was not great and a lot of manual refinement was necessary on the prints. I've since discovered that my default exposure settings of 10 seconds was significantly overexposing each layer - the result is everything is a little bit bigger than it should be, which means when you have a peg that's supposed to fit in a hole, both the peg ends up bigger AND the hole ends up smaller (because the material around the hole is bigger!).

Apart from that, it's a great figure - there are a few options, including the jetpack or a billowing cloak, and the big rifle too.

The base is just temporary - I have an IG-11 on the go too and plan to have them together in a scene eventually.

Really nice work, Ant!

That's great Ant. The future of modeling is here! Yet another thing stored in a "file".

Now that is really cool. Now to figure out how to get one.

Agreed 100%, it's a lovely model, but as far as getting one, I've given up. I've been getting quotes from numerous 3D print companies and it's just ridiculous! Some were coming in at over £400, not sure what the dollar is on that, but a lot of bucks for a little kit.

What is most frustrating, eBay is now riddled with producers who have downloaded this and many others of the Gambody portfolio and are selling them as their own products!! Yes, digital recasting is here in a big way, and as with the traditionally produced kits, I won't touch it.

I emailed Gambody to point this out and they seemed genuinely surprised that someone would be so dishonest

Huge apologies Ant, I've gone off at a ranting tangent here, your kit is superb and I wish I had a 3D printer!

Cheers,
Paul
