Space Animals

#1 Post by sippog »

After a longish break from doing any painting due to an ulcerated foot (basically I had to stay off my feet for two months or risk pain and swelling), I’m tackling this great set of animal astronauts sculpted by Raccoon Miniatures.

I've seen versions of these done in bright primary colours with all the details picked out but I'm a bit allergic to that style of painting. The plan was to do the space suits in muted colours with some chipping to reveal rust, (seen here as the underpainting). Trying out the hairspray and salt chipping technique. I've tried using a proprietary chipping fluid (AK) before with limited success. Probably didn't seal the undercoat properly. This time I tried a coat of Johnson's Klear with Dullkote on top.

Here's my first try at chipping. I used two grades of salt and spray can hairspray. Worked okay scrubbing off with water but I couldn't use a toothpick to scratch because I kept going down to the resin.

Nearly there.
