I prefer to use this product.
http://www.hlj.com/product/WRK00251
Many car-modelers prefer it over Alclad II Chrome. Think there is/was a similar product by SNJ.
Warning: That stuff is powder-fine DON'T sneeze while you got it opened, it will get everywhere.

The Alclad chrome is best used by painting gloss black over your primer. Then you mist the Alclad chrome over the gloss black and it really pops! I have even used a spray can of gloss black for larger areas. You will love the results. The Alclad line is pretty good. I havent tried any other brands for metals as i loved this line. Love the jet exhaust color

Alclad works for me. Just has to be extremely smooth and glossy under the chrome.

HLJ will have a stall at the IPMS show in Telford
http://www.ipms-uk.co.uk/smw_traders_2010.htm
If I remember correctly they offer a discount for any goods ordered before the show and picked up on the day so it might be worth trying them if you are going.
Here's the link with the e-mail address for requests to take to the show:

Hey Pete
Thanks for that , as i may go there , due to me now not going to memro as the guest signings are awefull.
Will they bring the stuff along without me pre-ordering?
As telford is just before birmingham i don't realy want to go just for this , do they do the large scale minatures like andrea and 90mm -120mm minatures.
i really might go
cheers

Hi Jason.
I would pre-order, they bring a lot of kits, etc but I reckon odd supplies like this might be low on their totem-pole.
Have a few British friends who pre-ordered and were happy.
BTW, here is a comparison of Alclad & Kosutte:

Should have posted above earlier.

There's also Alsa paints. I haven't used it, but the demos look good. It's very expensive but they do offer a small sample size that might be enough for 1 model.

Re: How to make Alclad 2 mirror chrome?
The only other thing I would add is that the undercoats need to be very smooth, so extremely fine sanding has to be done too. I just love Alclad2.Avall15 wrote:The Alclad chrome is best used by painting gloss black over your primer. Then you mist the Alclad chrome over the gloss black and it really pops! Jay if you have never been to Telford it's worth a visit. You will easily be able to pick up Andrea stuff, the traders have boxes and boxes of them......just be prepared to ignore the hundreds of Spitfires all painted the same colourjason hunt wrote:Hey Pete

Re: How to make Alclad 2 mirror chrome?
Yep, leave it. I've seen where guys have put gloss poly over it to shine it up more and have actually dulled it down.jason hunt wrote:So ,if i spray the whole hand gloss black , they spray alclad 2 over it , do i then polish the alclad or leave it be?

You can actually use modelers tape to make certain panels a different metal color w/o ruining the first coat. Its pretty tuff stuff.

Re: How to make Alclad 2 mirror chrome?
You don't need to use any special gloss black, just pick up a can of Krylon or Rustoleum Glossy black and give it a couple cotes. Just let it dry a few days before misting on the Alclad. Make sure it is mirror smooth before spraying. Once it's dry it's done, no top cote just let it be.

How exactly do you use this stuff? I have it but I don't really know how to use it. I tried to polish with it but it did nothing.Mad_Modeler wrote:I prefer to use this product.

Re: How to make Alclad 2 mirror chrome?
You apply it over a gloss black coat(just like Alclad II) using a ear-bud or similar.
Than use the supplied cloth to gently polish it. Same systems a Rub n' Buff(sic).
It will got from a grayish look to metalic soon. Work it in small areas.
Wear the gloves and don"t sneeze while the tub is open.
