Shapeshifters Evil of Frankenstein bust

#1 Post by Stewart Jackson »

On to my second completed piece for 2021. This finishes up the Shapeshifters line of Hammer busts and this is a killer sculpture by Peter McKenna for the series. Peter clearly worked very closely from stills of Roy Ashton's reference shots of the final design for the monster applied to Kiwi Kingston.

Apparently, Hammer's execs and producer were not sure how to best make use of Universal's permission to use the Boris Karloff makeup as a basis for this creature, so Roy did the best he could based on his given directions and without directly copying Pierce's design.

A truly fun paint up with loads of different surfaces and textures to play around with. I hope you enjoy Kiwistein!

My next plans are to do tributes for lost friends. For John Tucky, I'm going to do the Frankenstein Must be Destroyed figure (Love this kit!), for Brian Hamilton, I've had his first draft of the Herbert Lom Phantom of the Opera bust awaiting paint and lastly for Vin Bordogna the Vampire Lovers figure that he and I collaborated on. So more Hammer to come.

Fabulous work Stuart, this is the first and only paint up I've seen of this bust
Clearly a rare one, I was looking at my Roy Aston book last night (Greasepaint and Gore) and wondering if you were
getting this chap finished!

It's great to read the list of your next line of builds heading for the bench, real eye candy, but also your choices to pay
tribute to the great guys that produced them but are sadly no longer with us.

Well done sir, keep the Hammer goodness coming!

Cheers,
Paul

Beautifully done! For whatever reason I've always had a soft spot for Kiwi and the Ashton makeup from this film.

You might be confusing Twins of Evil with Stuart's amazing sculpt of 'Lust for a Vampire'?
(hope you don't mind me adding the image Stuart, it's your superb paint up!)

Thanks Paul! Appreciate you fielding that question.

Jason- yes, I did her in 2003 and released her along with 3 other kits under the Gothic Arts Ltd. banner all cast by Mark Brokaw. Later I sold the molds to John Tucky of X-O Facto and he continued to produce them for a number of years. There still may be some out there floating around, so I wish you good fortune in your quest!

Funny you should mention Twins of Evil, there will be forthcoming news about a set with the two Collinson twins (one a vampire and the other not) forthcoming. I'll hold off saying who as it is not my place to release that info, but there will be joy in Hammerland!

Gorgeous flesh tones. A stunning paint-up.

Zepher- Thanks so much, I tried to give the flesh a little more detail and variation in color than you could see in the film as Peter McKenna's sculpt just gives you a wealth of detail to work with.

Grimm Jimm68- Thanks man. I know what you mean, I feel Roy Ashton's pain in trying to meet the expectations of his producer and powers that be at Hammer, but being given conflicting ideas, or no ideas at all must have been frustrating.
