Shouldn't a qualifying factor for N.R.A. be the N part? I was there way back then, and so were you when the Bad Tabitha conversion got this ball rolling. Because then why not just enter the Wonderfest contest?

Surprisingly, the N part was missing from many of the entries this year.

Yeah gotta agree. If an entry is a non nude then it's off to the general contest with it. I was under the impression that the NRA was for kits showing various assets inappropriate for the general viewing public.

Well...not necessarily.
I think that what was recognized was that a lot of girl kits are of a more "pin-up" nature...yet not necessarily naked, (Think Gil Elvgrin), and because that is slightly off from "mainstream" kits, the entrants might feel a little more at home in a venue that is dedicated to appreciation for the female form.
In past years I've seen completely naked kits, as well as clothed kits in the N.R.A. competition...space babes, Vampirellas, Elviras, Betty Page, some clothed, some not.
I (personally) feel that it's a great venue for those of us who enjoy paining a girl kit to display our work (whether clothed or un-clothed) without having to be concerned about what others might say; and frankly, I'd much rather have a venue like this to display my work in, than worry about someone else who doesn't care for the genre (as they have every right to) feeling uncomfortable seeing the pieces.
I painted Roberto's Jungle Girl (who's completely covered) wearing a leopard skin bikini and entered it in the main contest, I also painted Boony's "Apocalyptic Vixen" (who's also completely covered) and chose to enter her in the NRA...either one could have gone in either contest.
I guess what I (personally) think it kind of boils down, and what I appreciate about having the N.R.A. is the fact that like it or not, this hobby can be looked at a little strangely by the rest of the general population (who might jokingly refer to us as a "bunch of guys (and girls) painting dolls and monsters"), then add to that the stigma of guys painting girl kits...keeping that part (the pin-up girls) separated and a little more private helps the hobby in general maintain a more mainstream appearance.
And finally, this particular thread was never intended to be a debate about the morality of girl kits, or the morality of the general public in regards to their acceptance of said kits, so lets please not turn this into a debate about what the public should or should not accept, or what we should or should not build.
One last thing...someone asked about seeing pictures...I'm sure that eventually there will be a way to see them, but as the title of the event indicates, there was some "Naked" resin, and it is my understanding that based on the type of Forum this is (as far as no age restrictions) pictures of "naked" resin (although not explicit or pornographic) probably isn't allowed...and also, as Crazy Joe has stated, some picture hosting services will not even allow links to pictures showing breasts (which was basically the extent of the "nakedness"), so posting pictures may be challenging.

Wonderfest rules stated no nudity...so for me that was the dividing line in deciding what entry went where. For me, contests are a means for sharing my work with as wide an audience as possible. It's interesting how nudity (not pornography) offends yet gore and dismemberment does not. Hey I appreciate having a venue to share a piece I've spent oodles of time on. I would have loved to have my Dany sit in the regular contest room but she didn't fit the rules. I don't think she really fit NRA thematically either, other than her breasts were exposed but it was great there was a place for her. I work almost exclusively on chick kits...hey they're prettier to look at, and I had several in the regular room. Loved the Arial kit at NRA...she was a beaut. Oh and resin addict...loved your Jungle girl. The leopard spots were a great idea and well done indeed. Can't promise I won't borrow it when I finally get around to doing mine!

I think you nailed it perfectly on the head!!!

It is a very sad aspect of the Puritan American culture to prevent displaying the perfect female (and male) form as created by God, while allowing all kinds of gore, ugliness and extreme violence to be openly displayed for all (including kids) to see. I wish people presenting their models of Alien, predator and other abominations would put a warning on the subject of their thread. Every time a boob is displayed we get the big "warning sign", which always makes me laugh. Have we all forgotten that we sucked on these with such pleasure (and still do) shortly after being born?

This is one of my favorite paintings, by Gustave Courbet: L'origine du monde (the source of people) and I had the privilege to see it at the North Carolina Art Museum in Raleigh, during an exhibit:

I agree with you 100%, however, this subject has been debated to death, numerous times before...I started this thread, and as I previously said..."this particular thread was never intended to be a debate about the morality of girl kits, or the morality of the general public in regards to their acceptance of said kits, so lets please not turn this into a debate about what the public should or should not accept, or what we should or should not build."
If anyone really wants to start that debate again, I respectfully ask that they start their own thread in the appropriate forum.
Thanks

That Courbet always cracked me up. When people would ask my favorite painting I'd mention this. I knew it as "The Origins of Life". Most have never heard of it. I'd simply tell them to look it up.

Addressing several here, I guess....

Why don't folks enter their "publicly acceptable" build ups in the regular contest? I don't have an answer. Perhaps because girl kits are pretty much lost in the shuffle of monsters, sci fi figs, and super heroes. Perhaps its the cost. NRA has no entry fee. Perhaps they'd rather show their work in a themed contest. Perhaps its something I haven't listed. I know Phil's just happy to see models f beautiful women on the tables.

Only accept kits meeting the N criteria: Why do that? It's about the female form presented for our appreciation. If an entry is within the guide lines, why not? They are beautiful, too.

As to gore and horror needing warning labels, that's a discussion about our culture at large. I'd rather not go into that on this thread. Builds depicting violence against women, torture, or mutilation are not allowed at the NRA as they are inconsistent with the underlying philosophy. As stated previously, those wanting to see such builds are free to approach the show administration and get their own event set up. That's all that need be said about that here.

Thanks to all who support the NRA with build ups for the contest, and/or attendance on the big night.

Have a day filled with beauty.

Also, we always need photos of the models on display. If you've got some you'd like to share, please send them to Phil at nakedresin@pcisys.net.

Thanks!

Tom Grossman wrote: ...and yes, there will be a new public vote award this year. Filmy's Girls/Futuristic Retro will be sponsoring the first ever Master Class. This is for new entries painted by past NRA Best of Show winners. It's also the only award Master Class entries will be competing for.

Other public vote awards are:
Best Little Hottie for the best small scale entry that's up to 120 mm. Sponsored by the CBA.
Best Embodiment of the Flintstone Spirit for the model Jimmy would like the best.
Best of Show sponsored by Jimmy Flinstone.

Sponsors Choice Awards this year are:
Best Filmy Style sponsored by Filmy's Girls/Futuristic Retro
Best Girl with a Weapon sponsored by Arsenal Models
Best Girlie Girl sponsored by Phil O'Girl
So, is this the lineup for categories again this year?
And I also have a question in regards to the "Master Class".
If an individual qualifies to participate in the "Master Class" category, does that bar him (or her) from having entries in the other categories, or does an individual who qualifies for the "Master Class" category choose what he (or she) feels is their best work to enter in the "Master Class" competition, but in addition may also enter additional pieces in the general contest(s)?
Specifically I've got one piece I'm working on for the "Master Class", but I also (if time permits) may have one that might be considered in the "Best Babe with a Weapon" category...can I enter that too, or am I limited to entries in the "Master Class" only?

Hi,

We have not set up this year's categories yet. Phil will be going to the same sponsors so it's likely that this year will be the same.

Master Class. When you're hot, you're hot. Congratulations on the achievement! That grouping was put in place to keep the contest welcoming to folks of all skill levels. With that said, we will be using that rule again this year.

Looking forward to seeing your entries.
