"The Queen of the Prom"

#1 Post by knightowl57 »

About a month ago, I stumbled upon an announcement by Dark World Creations of an on-line painting contest they were sponsoring to commemorate their first anniversary in business: the Dawn of the Apocalypse Painting Competition. DotA is their proprietary line of zombies, survivors, and the extreme vehicles used by those who have yet to die the first time. . . As an aside, they also have a line dedicated to 2000AD that just keeps getting better and better. . .

Dark World Creations is an internet-only retailer. The Red Lancers is the only retailer in the States (that I know of) that carries their products; BUT. . . they don't carry their busts. So when I decided to throw my hat in the ring with their commemorative event, my only option was to order direct. NOT A PROBLEM! Aaron (bka Rin) is all about the CS. I first contacted him on a Tuesday, and my figure was on-order on Thursday evening. He shipped on Friday, and it was in my hands a week later! Packaging was exceptional, and the contents were pristine!! It was a pleasure to see that kind of concern and care for a client!!

The bust. The character of Jessica, both the 70mm FF and the 1/10th scale bust, were designed/ executed by the Swedish graphic artist/sculptor, Pedram Karimfazli. And it (the bust) is exceptional: casting is exquisite; fit is perfect – and keyed; and clean-up is minimal.

The bust consists of but two pieces: the bust itself and the ponytail. My only criticism of this piece is the fact that there is no means provided to display the bust. While this is clearly indicated in the description of the piece: "This bust does not include a base or a stand," it is decidedly a bump-in-the-road for the miniaturist who wants to get straight to painting. Personally, it's neither here nor there for me, especially as I tend to rework/replace the pedestal portion of all my busts. But to a relatively inexperienced miniaturist, this could be a deal-breaker after the fact.

The bust is essentially stock; but as good as it is, I felt it needed a few things to have it meet my vision for the completed piece. To this end, I enhanced it as follows:
  • 1) Added an integral pedestal/plinth that was sculpted in MS.
    2) The bust has been given the “Historex” treatment overall: thinning of trailing edges, undercutting layered surfaces, scribing, etc.; most notably, the right shoulder strap of the dress.
    3) Enhancement of the dorsal surface of the pinna with MS: the back of the ears are essentially featureless.
    4) Wound edges and torn shoulder strap enhanced/extended with MS to create greater sense of depth.
    5) Added distressed areas of flesh on the face, including torn left ear lobe piercing.
    6) Areas of facial flesh textured Dorland's Wax Medium.
Finally, the bust is painted in oils over an acrylic undercoat.

Thank you for the write up and history of the piece..

I really like how you handled the flesh, it has that dead look underneath the skin to it.. I love the eyes and wounds.

Seeing your paint up makes me want to buy one...

All in all outstanding work on her..-- GOLD all the way.

Hi, Tom,

TOO kind, good sir! Thank you for your generous comments. I'm delighted that my vision of the "walking dead" struck a chord.

Much of the credit for the translucency of the skin must go to the oils. I usually work with the oils from the basecoat out; but this time, what would normally be my basecoat is actually the second layer of oils. I also took advantage of the inherent relative transparency of the medium by laying down a fine network of veins all across the chest in acrylics as part of my undercoat.

It's a VERY fun little piece that is as challenging as it is rewarding. By all means, have a go! Would love to see your take on her. . .

Thanks again!

Very nice work, you have achieved a wonderfully realistic 'damaged flesh' look. Great job!

Came across Dark world Creations last year at the IMPS Nationals in Telford here in Uk They had a stand there. I was well impressed by the quality and design of all their models but and a big but was the price, for a 70mm 1/24 scale figure it was £30 $48.
I do believe that they are way to expensive for the size.
I looked and looked again and really just couldn't justify paying that much.

Augie, you've outdone yourself here. Impressive at any scale but 1/10? You've got good eyes, my friend. :D

Gentlemen,

Your most gracious and enthusiastic responses are beyond anything I might have hoped for. Thank you all! And it certainly validates the feeling I had as I was wrapping her up: this one is special.

RUSTY: Thank you, my friend. And I certainly expect for her to be at the Atlanta Show in February.

BILL: Thank you, kind sir. The eyes are nowhere near what they used to be, but wearing two sets of reading glasses does the trick! :look:

Again, thank you all!

Very nice work, the gore and discoloured skin looks spot on.

Cheers, Scott!

Thank you for the kind words and taking the time to give her a looksee. There was much deliberation on how much gore to include--and I finally settled on just a tad over the top.

Best,

High praise indeed, Jim! Thank you so much!!

I spent about a week finalizing my palette. In terms of the actual painting, it was time well spent: once I started, things flowed seamlessly. . .

Thanks again!
