My attempt to inventory my collection.

#1 Post by tay666 »

For those who haven't seen comments in some other threads, I am taking on the mountainous task of inventorying every kit that I own.
First, just so I know exactly what I do have, and where it is. Second to see what I really don't care about anymore and maybe move it on.
To gain some room, to get some cash, and to better focus on what I really want to work on.

I am making this thread to help keep myself 'on task'. I find (for me) it is easier to stay focused on something if I feel compelled to post updates about the progress on it.

My first hurdle was deciding how I was going to do it. First thought was 'I'll just do a spreadsheet, like I always do'. The problem with that, is my kits are in the basement, and on the 2nd floor. My computer is on the first floor. So that would be a lot of back-and-forth. So I looked into different programs that I could possibly use on both my desktop, and on my tablet. Sadly, anything like that, will not work on my Windows 7 system. All require Windows 10 or up.
So I finally settled on using a google spreadsheet. Which I can use on both. As a matter of fact after I finish this post I will be taking my tablet to the basement to start on the next set of shelves.

So far, it is going well. I took a bunch of pics of the first 2 shelves and used those images to get started.

Image

So I have completely inventoried these 2 shelves and am sitting at 133 models already. I am thinking my total is going to be a bit scary when all is said and done.
On the bright side, I have already identified another 15 kits I will probably thin out.
I am 58 and not going to live forever. It's better if I do it, rather than leave it for someone else to deal with.

I still have all this left to go in the basement.

Good luck to you.

I started a list years ago in a similar fashion: kit name, location, producer, etc.

I then started separate a "For Sale" list of kits I've lost interest in building....

... and then both attempts simply failed for one reason or another.

I should give it another try. I'm sure I have reasonably desirable kits someone will want but that I'll never get to....

I'm in the same boat with my model stash. Plus, there's my comics, books, DVDs & Music CDs to thin out as well...

Thankfully, I thinned out my comics over a period of about 10 years starting around 2005.
I cleared most of my cassettes and CDs back before we moved in 2018.

Well, I went down the basement today, and cleaned up and put away every kit I had in progress!

Image

I then inventoried that shelf
Image

Sadly, that shelf contains 34 kits. :shocked2: :look:
Only 6 of which aren't actually started, but kits I intended to start, but didn't get to.

I think I need to knock out at least half of those before I start anything else when I get back to work.

One drawback I have found with entering things with the tablet. There is no easy way to copy a row, then paste it over several more rows.
So, I will be entering these 18 Mike Parks kits tonight up here on my desktop.
Image

Which will bring my total up to

185 kits so far!

Great progress Trevor !

I started keeping track of my kits and statues via excel spreadsheet way back in the late 90s when I got back into building / collecting.

I list the size (height and length) of the kit/statue , producer, sculptor, and cost when I bought it.

I also keep track of what I have sold and track the sales price (minus shipping and ebay fees) to the purchase price .

I have a separate excel file where I tack my completed and planned kit bashes.
I list the kits I used (or plan to use ) for each bash and short description of the parts that I modified or sculpted from scratch.

As of June 30, 2025, I have :

476 total kits and statues (includes built and unbuilt)

70 total kitbashes ; 22 finished, 48 in-work or planned

125 kits/statues that I previously sold (and now also including number of kits that I gave away to model club tv)

118% net return on investment (I.e, I have made 18% more money than I originally spent on the sold items) .
See my model kit collection on YouTube Model Club TV Episode 86

Thanks for looking !

My problem is, I have/had too many spreadsheets.
I had one for my Monster Scenes, I have several for my Prehistoric Scenes. I had one for other models. I had one for kits I want. I had one tracking what I bought and sold and prices, etc. Plus, I have an ongoing list on my website I have been sort of maintaining.
So, too much, too spread out, and too hard to keep up on.
It really all went to hell when we were preparing to move, remodeling the new house, then I got ill, and my kits were packed away, out of sight for over 2 years. New purchases just stayed in the box it came in and got tossed on the pile.
Once I got behind there was no catching back up.

This is my attempt to get a handle on all of it again.

I got a small shelf done

Image

Which brings me up to
214 kits so far

At last. Positive evidence that my complete lack of organization pays off.

Soldier on, Trev. You'll win out in the end.

Having said the above, here's my attempt at an audit. There must be something in the air. A pale example of a stash compared to some, but then I might not have the time others do. :-({|=

Nice collection Steve !
The darga t-rex and triceratops are awesome kits, but a bit challenging to build .

Trevor - I hope that you do not mind that we kinda hijacked your thread to share our collection counts as well. Sorry !

The trike is mostly finished but the two halves of the rex seem to come from two different kits. :?

Not at all.
I am enjoying hearing everyone else's journey.

Not much going on with the inventory the last couple days. The weather has actually been almost comfortable, so I have been catching up on some stuff outside.

Tonight I did enter all my raw Prehistoric Scenes kits that are on display in the basement.

Now up to
238 kits counted!
