IGOR!!!! "No it is pronounced eye-gor" I love him. Sculpt looks great.
Just watched this movie the other day and I still get a laugh at Inga (Teri Garr) saying do you want a roll in the hay? Then she flops around saying roll roll or something like that.
I have yet to even touch the clay but I did buy the lamp I wanted.

Well I didn't make it to my friends house so I didn't get any portrait sculpting in this weekend, but I did get started on my Evil Lyn sculpt as planned. Maybe when I get to the face I'll post those images in here whether I use a live model or not.

Re: Jam# 111Portraits, Faces and Expressions.
Hi Ho! I had some time to play with some new materials and thought I'd jump into the jam!
Been soul searching, or at least, new material searching. Trying to break myself out of my "Super Sculpey/Apoxie Sculpt" rut. I'm thinking that I should try wax for a change and see what I can make of it.
Up first... I bought a 5 lb tub of that "Monster Clay" stuff I'd been hearing good things about. "Works like clay, melts like wax". In my opinion,... a little too much like Soft Plasticene. Just too easy to move about. But, if it's a cheap substitute (non-toxic) to plasticene you are looking for, this stuff would do nicely. Would also be a nice substitute for Wed clay.
In my tinkering with MC, I ended up with a face reminiscent of Conan.. so I ran with it. Ehhh...

Next up... I bought 5 slabs of "Fuse Wax" by Willow Products. Been hearing good things about this wax. Decked myself out with a small crock pot for a warmer, a Max Wax pen, alcohol torch and metal dental tools. So... I'm set!
And... MAN! I LOVE THIS WAX! I believe Fuse was the material I've been looking for since I started sculpting! When warm, moved well, I can push this stuff around like a firm Sculpey clay. Cools slow, so you have time to work. Holds chiseled detail very well. And smoothing with heat is awesome!
Per a friend's request, he wanted to see me sculpt a "Dick Briefer's Frankenstein" (a famous cartoon from the 50's). Figured I'd give it a shot with Fuse. I was able to get a very nice likeness very fast and nearly finished in a few hours! With a little more work (an a body), I might have something here!
[A shout out to Tim] - I'm a wax convert! Don't think I'll go back to clay for a while. Looking to do my next complete kit project in Fuse wax.

2 faces, ATTABOY!, Adam!
That Conan face has some smirky attitude going on like "Hmmmm.....YOU challenge ME?"
And really good translation of the Franky head. I think the FUSE likes you.

RIGHTBACKATCHA BABY!
yeah wax is fun and easy isnt it Adam?
i love the ease of making a form and smoothing. as the guys on here can attest, i have done the rounds on mediums while 'trying to find my material' !!
i still get a nostalgic hankering to do sculpey or epoxie but at the heart o the problem is that i no longer like having to deal with dust and sanding/grinding. wax at least is natural and dust free while at the same time smells great. i add mint oil to mine! ahhhh! minty fresh!!
Of course now i have digested some of Popsculpture, i enjoy brewing my own waxes.
i often have a known love hate relationship with Armatures so thats where 360 and Castilene win out but if i use only a partial armature then Chavant Hard is cool to use. wax unlike an armature i find, can be bent or posed better than wire so now i used wire only in legs and arms...
i have nearly finished my second face in Asbro guys and will endevor to put some pics up on weds. oh and a belated Happy Thanks Giving to all of you in here too!

Re: Jam# 111Portraits, Faces and Expressions.
Hi Tim! - I'm planning on trying out more waxes as I experiment, but I think Fuse was a good starting point for me. I just ordered more! After playing with it in this jam, I want to do my next kit entirely in Fuse.darkeye wrote:...I guess if asked, my weapons of choice are Castilene, Asbro and willow wax 360 with Chavant as my preferred clay.

I'm eyeballing Zen as a possible next trial... though, the description reads like it may be a bit hard. I'll keep your list in mind for other experiments. Hmmm.... I hadn't thought about the fun of mixing. Guess I'll try that once I have several different waxes in the house.
I am good at making armatures, but to do them right takes so long. I, too, am looking for using only the barest wire in legs (and necessary) for pegging the sculpt into position as I work.
!!! What do you use to prevent the wax from sticking to other wax in the event that you wish to make a part that fits closely (but separately) from another? Not "keying", per se, but more like "two figures holding/touching" and need to align together, but be separate castable parts? With sculpey, or Aves, I treat on side with a lubricant and press new material into place to get the keyed impression and work from there. Curious how that works in wax. ???

.......which i liberally dust over the model while holding it and prior to carving or attatching stuff. bit like sculpey in that respect i guess. i discovered during an older jam that sanding pads dusted with talc were nice for smoothing with no heat required. oh and if you fancy brewing a carving wax, check out the pages of the last jam for a simple one thats cheap to make.
must take that photo later...... got some school work to do as well....

Yup! Having fun with it and I LOVE the smell! Working on a new head to post later. Looking cool so far!amusedjester wrote:Excellent work, Adam! It looks like wax just flowed really natural for you.
Tim- thanks for the talc idea! Got plenty of it around since I use it as release in my molds. Talc... everywhere. And now, another use for it! The polishing part sounds cool. I'll have to try that. Can the wax be reused after using talc? I'm assuming, yes. Does the wax degrade after so long with too much talc in the mix?

Re: Jam# 111Portraits, Faces and Expressions.
Another attempt in Fuse. A sort of burned "mutant". I was playing around with melting the wax to look like burned flesh. The rest was me just letting the Fuse take me where it wanted. I didn't have any idea what this was going to look like as I was sculpting.

The pics actually don't do it justice. Looks better in person. With a little more work, could be something I might want to make a body for. 1:6 scale.

doesnt seem to Adam. i have had no probs so far. Talc increases wax density and most toy waxes have some in. got that from Popsculpture. great book for waxers if u dont have it...
spent yesterday on school work. doing a female character in Maya and ZB. i have taken pics of the wax sculpt but have yet to show n tell.

Hey T-Bone! There's nothing in the JamRulez that says you can't post digi-sculpts..........just sayin'
Adam, that melty effect is working nicely. Kind of a Freddy Kruger/Pizza the Hut mishmash. It also kind of reminds me of the guy in Robocop that gets soaked by the tank of acid.
I mixed up some toy wax a few years ago and used baby powder for the talc portion. Whenever I use it, ( which isn't often enough
) the smell reminds me of when my Munchkins were just little baby Munchkins.

Re: Jam# 111Portraits, Faces and Expressions.
I too have yet to start anything for the faces. No excuses it is just a mental block. Instead of spending 4 hours in my well lit and comfortable and quiet studio last night I played Lara Croft on Xbox. Sure I had fun but this morning I feel guilty, it is like I cheated on my clay. Now I am at my day job and I am thinking I can't wait to get home and tear into some clay.
