Capt.'s butt is so tight you could bounce a quarter off it!

Looking good, Jr.! Upon the next occurrence of enlightenment, I shall endevor to elucidate my argillaceous observations with more pomposity.

Say WHAT???  Please tell me you used several dictionaries to find those exact words, Dennis. Otherwise, I might have to come out there and beat you with a stick....a small stick, but a stick nonetheless.

The final piece. I just need to do some small refinements on the boot tops. After finishing the detail on the gloves I went and did the changes to the chest. A slight removal but I did a few measurements on the distance from the clavicle to the bottom of the chest. By removing that area, I was left with the perfect opportunity to lift that side of the ribcage. Freeing the space underneath to better emphasize the tilt of the body.
Image
It will be going into the oven tomorrow for the baking.
This will be the final photo for this piece as I am sure the scales will take a long time to complete. I want to get a start on the car part of the Jam as I indulged myself a little bit on this little project.

HA-HA!!!!!

I knew all of those words except for "argillaceous", which I accidentally stumbled on while looking for the correct spelling of "elucidate". The dictionary just kind of flipped open to that word (it means clayey, BTW)

And by all means- indulged yourself as much as you want! The results speak for themselves. 8)

GREEN LANTERN; HAL JORDAN...

Image

Image

well , he is coming along, cut the head off and the arms at the Glove tops. was going to do a Punisher but i always do the same characters for study so having never done a DC Character i settled on Hal Jordan due to seeing the trailer on U-tube.

started to add the Visor but wax will be the one for the head. should be able to get some crisp detail on it. i plan on molding him in to wax and maybe finish my first reasonable piece. would be cool to go to resin and paint him.

feel free to comment guys.

Tim - got sidetracked looking for that GL trailer. Anyways, I think his neck might be too wide. I am not sure. If I look at it up to the top ribcage it seems to fit but as I add to look at the waist something throws me off. I think it is because as it stands the neck width is almost 3/4 the width of the waist. I like the work on the torso, though.

Dennis - "Clayey" aw c'mon, you just made that word up. :alcoholic:

neck adjusted, it was a little over half the width of the waist so i adjusted it to waist width divided by 2.1. its now 20mm in width. Good call Jnr! 8)

outside again today, its suuny and cooler than yesterday and am raking the piece downall over then bring it all home with brushes and D-limonene.

Tim - I KNOW you're getting better. I think, like you said at one time, you were putting a lot of concentration on female figures (and you're work there speaks for itself) that you had to re-learn a lot about the male anatomy. With my Cap piece, I was able to cheat a bit by tensing up all the muscles. It makes things easier to identify.

For this particular piece, I made the armature and base stable so I didn't touch the figure like I usually do. I use to hold the sculpture as I worked on it, constantly having to re-work areas. I also cut up the arms at the glove so I can work on the hands individually. I think I will try to carry over this method to future projects. It wasn't as awkward as I had thought it would be.

I can tell you guys are getting better. Each and every Jam. I guess that makes me old, too (now that I think about it, I've been hanging around here since the beginning of the Jams--someone tell me to get a life  ). Of course, you dudes being regular, consistant contributors to the Jams helps the observation process a lot! Speaking of......what ever happened to all of our "old" regular jammers? Where you ladies and fellas been hiding???

Small update:
Image

I changed a few lines. They might have looked good to me on paper, but in 3D??? Not so much. I'm bringing (what would be) the passenger side into symmetry with the driver's side. I hope. I hate raking leaves, but raking clay is really relaxing for some reason. I must have had a Japanese stone/sand garden in a previous life or something.

Jnr , as i said , your Cap gets a ten from me. he looks very Pro indeed. any pics of the baked piece? you gonna paint him?? .... Nice to know its all worth the study in the end. i still have some minor issues with my Femmes. i ofter make the legs too long or the Ass too low. i also realised i dont know the back, back of legs and arm muscles too well and as a result the are lacking on my stuff- spent too long on the front eh?!!!

Dennis- Car is looking very slick. could picture that as a 750 hp V12 monster!!
yeah, jams are qiueter these days but i wont leave; i will always jam with you guys. half the reason i have improved is the jams and all the crits and encouragement i have received.

a big thanks to you both for running the Jams!!! :bday: :thumb2:

i am quite excited about finishing my sculpt up which is only hours away and next week transferring to wax. in some ways i wish i had used sculpey but oils clay is darned good stuff.

Dennis - yeah, i am almost tempted to think you're old as dirt. :D Seriously, the jams wouldn't be the same without you in it. That car is looking very good. So smooth and sharp. I can see now that you work very well with mechanical designs. Something that for some reason I can't seem to get my head around.

Tim - The baked version turned out 98% okay just need to repair one of the arms a little. I still need to put the scales on him so it will take some time to mold him. One of the things that improved my proportions is to stick to the armature proportions and stick to similar scales. I would do multiple armatures for future use. The first sculpt is measured carefully and in detail and the rest follows the proportions. I try to carry over things that I like from previous pieces to the next.

I miss the others, too. I know Tony sent me a p.m. hoping to get some free time soon to get back to sculpting. Hopefully, everyone else is doing well.

That's "Older" that dirt, son.

Thanks! Mechanical I'm good with. It's things such as sculpting a likeness I'd like to nail down. Some day when I have more time....... :alcoholic:

Dennis since you do so well with planes and mechanical stuff, have you thought about sculpting a face using planes? like so...maybe use this to transition between the two and train yourself to look at faces in a new way.

this is exactly how i carve my faces too. good technique. smooth off the lines and hey presto! Face!!

i have noticed that i am pretty god at carving a block of cured sculpey in to a head. must be my old epoxy days to thank .

Jnr, i also measure stuff alot, thats which i buy other peoples work. i am a measuring junkie. my weapon of choice is the Vernier Guage!! the local sculptor near me called it a device for the anal! thats me!!

i threw up another body sculpt yesterday. only took a few hours(pics later). i was testing a new armature design and have FINALLY(!!!) found a method of foil wrapping i like that is solid when wrapped, no flexing and cracking for me anymore!! :2guns:

No, but I've thought of using trains and automobiles. (John Candy/Steve Martin joke) (yes, I know. It's not funny if you have to explain it :P )

I actually hadn't considered that.....hmmmmm............

Tim, I don't want to see pics of anything that took you a few hours to throw up! :puke: Gross!

So I know it's rough but i figured I'd start to get the basic shape of what I want. I don't even know how to get the wheels on. SS is to soft right now, especially for this size. Anyway, I think I will call it, "The DoorStop"

wow! thats Fine Art right there! :P look out Damian Hurst.

my suggestion for ss is the rule of epoxy; best forms are from cured material. bake a block of ss and carve your forms and line mate. its what i do when i use greenstuff. just a thought.
