Jam # 95 Sexy Robots

#1 Post by amusedjester »

Time for a new Jam theme. This one is all about sexy robots. Male or Female, although all of pictures I have are of the female look. :P Here's a few to get the imaginative ideas flowing.

Hmmm... possibly gives me an excuse to either have a Battlestar Galactica or Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles marathon while on vacation this week. :-k

Currently my #1 motivation method is a mix of looking at my account balance und punching myself in the face from time to time (if I get too lazy), but I'm not sure if that technique works for everone :?

Talking about motivation - I'll try to be in again, already got some kind of design concept, but first that commission piece has to get off the desk and with the unexpectedly high temperatures this week the Sculpey's so damn soft and sticky that it' nearly impossible to finish the surface properly. (Any good ideas on that subject?)

I dont want to derail the thread too far, but what kind of freeze spray do you use? I got some of the freeze spray for sports injuries here, but that stuff will soften the sculpey extremely. Far more than lighter fluid. Might be because of the chlorine, I dont have a clue. Also got normal canned air that I use for NSP and wax, but it doesnt seem to help much with Sculpey :? Clearing the fride and cooling the sculpt down in there every 30 minutes works, but still costs a lot of time and the surface usualy gets too warm after working for 5-10 minutes. At the moment I'm considering baking everything pretty early and working my way through a dozen rounds of filler and sanding, but I'd like to avoid that.

So here's my "concept" so far, it's actually a pretty lazy solution. The face/pose is based on a bust I started as a portrait study, but I never finished it, so I can probably go from there. The android/robot design thingy is heavily inspired by another illustration I found. As usual - I'm not an illustrator :P

Image

Edit: Wrapped my head around the rest of the design, and like the direction so far. I just realised though, that if I use the existing head, the whole bust would be about 9 inches tall. There goes my "handy little bust" plan...

Daniel - Nice design. great robotic elements, yet it clearly has the feminine touch.

Daniel, interesting design. Very fashion model-ish. 8)

Well, I slapped a layer of clay on the head of my armature last night. Maybe it will get me out of my funk. :2guns:

I discovered awhile back on a previous jam that she doesn't seem to be an easy likeness to capture. Or at least not for me and that was when I wasn't having the issue of not being able to sculpt a face that I seem to be having now. I think I'm on head #6 or 7 on my Purgatori sculpt :(

Anyway,I wish I had time to join in on this jam but I don't think I'm going to. Been trying to finally finish up other projects during my vacation and some are going slower than others.

Dennis- at least that's a step in the right direction to getting out of that funk. I think usually I find when in a funk it's best to just play with the clay and push it around and let it tell you what it wants to be. Work it without any preconceived idea of where it's going. Sometimes you'll surprise yourself with the end results then.

About 4 inches...so what's that? 1/3rd scale?
Well here's some hours of work and I'm already feeling out of my depth...the lady's face is so...flat:

Ah well, I'm soldiering on. If nothing else, I'll come out with an even healthier respect for portrait sculptors, I think!

Paul, Sam??? Which is it.. I see so many names for you it seems like, Riteguytu. Anyway, yes her face is flat. Which is why I had so much trouble with it when I attempted it. I'd get it looking good from the from but then the side view would be off or vice versa... I finally gave up. Hopefully you'll have better luck than I sir!

HA! So I'm not alone! I had "Sam", myself, but the "Paul" threw me for a loop.

It's pretty flat, but it's a Pretty flat :drool2:

She does seem to have a very round forehead though. It would be nice to see her with a scanning laser grid contoured onto her head to see how her features flow together, wouldn't it?

I need to add some arm stubs to my armature yet. Forgot about that part. I sure wish they'd have shown her Terminator undercarriage to get some reference on it. The little fiddly bits seen in the poster don't show enough and that apparatus she's hanging from is what's really kept me from starting on this sculpt in the past. How does it connect to her and where does it connect to? Decisions, decisions.
