Devonian Encounter

#1 Post by overspray »

Whew, glad this one is done. It’s like 4 kits in one - the Creature, Julie, the boat and the base; 27 pieces in all. All resin, 1/9th scale, sculpted by Jeff Yagher and produced by Monsters in Motion. I got this from MIM in 2019, but I’m not sure when it was first issued. Not to start the MIM bashing again, but I was really disappointed with the mold condition. I spent a lot of Dremel time just removing extraneous resin, and the 5 connecting points between the characters, boat and base were more suggestions than anything else. These connections are tricky because Julie’s hand is connected to the boat, the boat and one creature claw are connected to the rock spires and the other claw is attached to Julie’s leg. It took a lot of time trying to get everything to align correctly. Not the first time I wished I had three hands. Eventually I decided to first connect Julie and the Creature with a screw at that joint which allowed me the ability to twist them a little to align with the other connections. In the end I was really surprised at how high the bow of the boat had to be to fit it all together.

All that said, it’s an amazing and dynamic concept and kudos to the sculptor, molder and producer to create such a kit. I was pleasantly surprised by the the relatively small footprint as it’s more vertical than I anticipated, which is great for shelf space. Other cool parts are the 2 devonian fish and the eel. I improvised a bit by putting the eel peeking out of the boat at all the commotion, but it’s a little hard to see. I wanted to name the boat and decided to name it after the Creature’s creator, again a detail that’s hard to see. I added talus/ballast rock to the base which covered/obscured a few details, but I thought it was a good trade off.

Damn, talk about work ! It was all worth the effort, that's a beauty. You certainly did a great job on the boat weathering. I will load it all up into the Gallery tonight.

Great job on a very challenging kit (I had one once upon a time and agree about the castings).

And I love the extra touch of naming the boat.

Yeah. Looking at this I can see the nightmare of getting it all lined up.
But man, the way it turned out, it definitely was worth the headache.

Thanks so much for all the comments Gents! I appreciate it.

Hey Spock - thanks for adding to the Gallery (and all you do in general). Your photos look much better than mine - what software do you use to replace the background? Those came out great.

That is a complex model design--it does look like a nightmare to put together.

Now I am reminded--anyone remember the Creature From the Black Lagoon aquarium decoration?
I had one of those.

That looks superb. I love the color of the rotting boat.

It looks like hours of fun & frustration all rolled into one!

Nice job on a complex kit. I have one of these slated for building this year and your tips about positioning are really useful. Thanks. The 'Millicent' touch is really nice. I got my copy of this maybe 15 years ago and the castings seem nice and clean.

Superb results with this classic piece of Yagher art, the gravity defying composition really adds to the illusion of being under water!

Cheers,
