!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those teeth look terrifying close-up!! Phenomenal job!!!

P.S. I agree that Jack Horner is full of sh*t - TRex was a predator which scavenged when carrion was available.

P.P.S. To all those who say that TRex couldn't run, I have a thought-provoking question:

Can an 8-ton elephant (with puny, skinny legs, which can't get across moderately high obstacles) run? You bet - ever seen a charging African Bull in musth?

Then how can you say that an animal far more muscular and streamlined/balanced like TRex could not? Get a clue!

Isn't the lower jaw set a little too far back? I know that TRex had an overbite, but the photos make it look like it needs to be moved forward a little bit to match the upper jaw....

Thanks Vlad. Careful! don't let this thread get out of hand in a pointless Trex-politic thread now! :P

It's quite possible the jaw has slipped a bit back. I've detached it so that I can skulpt the inside and attach teeth, and also to prepare for future molding. So its possition is not really 100%, but I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks.

That's lookin' really nice, Staphan-

I WOULD get those teeth pushed in a couple o' mm. But that's me. I you said you were building this to please you- far be it for any of us to dissuade you from that. You build, you post, we laud your efforts, to which this point are pretty outstanding.

Jack Horner believe what he believes. I DO believe that T-Rex wouldn't be much of a runner- didn't need to be. It's prey wouldn't have been able to run much, either. (see how cer-oh-topsy-jolsens are built?) But I also believe given the choice between a sizzling lump of decaying flesh, and a robust live four-footed quarry, Rexy would have gone carrion every time. Not diminishing its predatory capabilities, which it would not have hesitated to use, but the path of least resistance is an natural reality. Just what I believe.

Sculpt on, dude.

Sorry I misspelled your name dude.

S-T-A-F-F-A-N.

That's kinda important.

Thanks man, I just got back from the sculpting table and that's just what I did. They're now starting to protrude on the other end  I wouldn't have posted here if I didn't want any input, so every word that is mentioned here are carefully considered and meassured against what I initially intended... So I really want to hear what everyone has to say here.

And I know my name causes trouble, for some reason especially for Americans. Staffan is quite unusual outside Sweden. I believe it's a Scandinavian version of Stefan, which I think is commonly German. But in my ears Staffan sounds more German than Stefan. Stefan is pretty common throughout the world, so usually my name gets spelled (and pronounced) Steffan. :P No worries man, I don't mind. I'm used to it!

It's looking great!

Looking at the side profile views, the next thing that I would recommend (moving away from the head for a bit) is to beef up the base of the tail a bit. There are HUGE muscles in the tail that connect to the back of the femur. It's called the caudofemoralis longis (cah-doh-fem-o-ral-is long-us), and it's sole function is to pull the femur backwards during locomotion (walking and... running). Take note of how thick a croc's tail is right at the base.

I'll work on your photos a little tonight, and provide you with some cross sections, and some other tips.

Why, of course it is! Or rather, Steven is the English version of Stefan, or Stephanus. Wikipedia has this to say: "derived through the Latin form Stephanus from the Greek Στέφανος (Stephanos), which means "crown" or "wreath"."

Jon: Thanks for the notes. I haven't even started on the tail yet, but I'll keep it in mind. Right now the tail is just the initial slapped-on-clay-layer-over-armature. As soon as I have a lead on the head I will pay attention to the rest of the body. Much appreciated, thanks.
(walking and... running)

Thanx! Actually I have no idea of how big Killer Kits Kong is. This one, however, will not be even remotely close to Wetas Rex' in appearance. Though, I would love to do a V-rex some day... Time will tell, but time is my main obstacle ;)

Dr.realart.md: Nice! He actually looks kind of cute! ;)

I finally got my camera out and took a few pics. I've been pretty busy with projects at work the last couple of weeks, but I've been picking on the sculpt a minute here and there. It's a very slow process, but since I don't work against any deadline it's quite fun. Like a advanced doodle... :) I finally found a length of the teeth that felt pretty good, and I tried the crocodile-ish lips... Some new pics:

I've also refined the other side of the face and started fleshing out some muscles and stuff. That site really proved to be worth a lot, Jon. The muscle chart was a great reference.

Staffan-

As far as I'm concerned, your hopes have been answered! Great teeth, now! Great length!

This is a really nice piece you are developing. I like the form, the movement, now, perhaps you can start thinking about how you will put the scales on. I certainly hope you don't put fedders on him/her.

Thanks Joe! No, I will not put feathers on. I am a big fan of the ideas of dinosaurs having feathers, but I can't for the life of me imagine a beast of this size having feathers...

But even if I mentioned Kong in this it does not mean I will go the croc-routine all the way here either ;) As far as skin texturing goes I will be a bit more traditional and focus on getting nice crisp folds, wrinkles and scales. If anyone has any special ideas and pics of previous work on this, please let me know. Can't get too much reference... 8)
And thanks Doc and John!
